US Open finalist was seething with organisers over Coco Gauff scheduling decision
US Open organisers felt the wrath of one star this time last year.
Jelena Ostapenko was furious with US Open organisers this time last year. The Latvian accuses bosses of going against their word and not allowing her enough time to rest ahead of her thumping quarter-final defeat by Coco Gauff.
Ostapenko, who plays in the women’s doubles final today (Friday), had stunned world No. 1 Iga Swiatek on the Sunday night. Their match finished just before midnight and the 27-year-old claimed she did not get to sleep until 6am.
She claims she was then told that her quarter-final against Gauff would not take place the night session on the Tuesday. However, when she woke up having finally fallen asleep at 6am, she learned she had actually been scheduled for the first match in the day session.
“I think it’s really hard to recover from those night matches, because after beating world No. 1, I went to sleep at, like, 5:00 in the morning, and still, you sleep for, I don’t know, maybe like seven, eight hours, but you completely don’t recover,” Ostapenko said at the time.
