Sofia Vergara Shares Her Hopes for a Return to Modern Family
Sofía Vergara recently shared her hopes to revisit her Modern Family character Gloria Pritchett while discussing her Netflix miniseries Griselda in a new interview with Variety. In an extensive interview, the Columbian-American actress reflected on her career, unpacked her latest role, and reminisced about her time filming Modern Family.
In the popular sitcom, Vergara played the feisty, fun-loving wife of Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) and mother of Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez) and Joe Pritchett (Jeremy Maguire). Over the last several months, a number of cast members have spoken about the chance of revisiting the series again, four years since the series ended. Vergara is certainly up for reprising her role again, commenting when asked about a revival:
I’d die to be on that set. It’d be so much fun. A TV movie maybe?
Vergara received four Emmy nominations for her performance as Gloria. Although she feels it might be too soon to revisit the Pritchett family right now, she hopes plans for a sequel or special come to fruition sooner rather than later. Vergara added how she often jokes with her TV husband Ed O’Neill that if they wait too long he might not be around. She said:
“I always joke with him. ‘Ed, don’t die. Because if we do the sequel, it will take some time, and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead!’”
Sofia Vergara’s Diverse Career
Since the end of Modern Family, Vergara has been busy working and expanding her acting portfolio. She joined America’s Got Talent as a judge in 2020. She also did some voice acting in Strays and Despicable Me 4. Earlier this year, Vergara starred as Griselda Blanco in the Netflix original miniseries Griselda. Inspired by real events, the story follows the rise of Colombian crime boss as she creates one of the most profitable cartels in history. Known as “the Godmother” of Miami’s drug empire, Blanco was a clever, ambitious businesswoman, a mother of four, and a ruthless drug lord.
After 11 years of playing the charming, hilarious Gloria on Modern Family, the role of Griselda was a new and exciting departure for the actress. Vergara knew taking on the role would be challenging in more ways than one. She noted how the day-to-day filming for Modern Family was less grueling compared to filming the miniseries. The scripts for Griselda were also more involved compared to the ABC sitcom.
“Back then, my lines were easy. It wasn’t like monologues.”
The project had great emotional and personal meaning for the actress. In 1996, Vergara lost her brother when he was murdered by a Colombian cartel in a failed kidnapping attempt. After watching a documentary about Griselda Blanco and Miami drug lords, Vergara was intrigued by the idea of unpacking the complex character. However, the project felt too dangerous to take on. In 2012, Blanco was murdered in Medellín. Years later, Vergara finally felt comfortable revisiting the story. She teamed up with Narcos producer Eric Newman and the rest became history.
Vergara’s performance in the gritty dramatization was well received. Griselda spent six consecutive weeks in Netflix’s Top 10. Vergara was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a miniseries at the 76th annual Emmy Awards alongside Naomi Watts, Brie Larson, Jodie Foster, and Juno Temple. Fans look forward to Vergara’s next project, be it comedy or drama, and hope for news of a Modern Family project soon.
