Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón Stun in Trailer for Spanish-Language Musical Emilia Pérez
‘Emilia Pérez’ is in select theaters Nov. 1 before it begins streaming on Netflix Nov. 13
Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña bring to life an emotional movie-musical for award season.
On Aug. 26, Netflix debuted the first trailer for Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language French film.
A synopsis for the movie, which describes it as “an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations,” says Gascón, 52, stars as a cartel leader in Mexico who tries to fake her death. Saldaña, 46, and Gomez, 32, also star alongside Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramírez.
The movie made its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May. A description of the film from that festival indicates that Gascón plays a character who transitions as they approach retirement.
“Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness,” the synopsis reads.
“The fearsome cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita (Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self.”
Emilia Pérez, written and directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, took home two awards at Cannes in May, including the best actress award for its ensemble of women.
On Aug. 19, Gomez shared a video of the moment she found out she was cast in the movie on Instagram, showing her holding back tears immediately after getting the call.
“I can’t believe I got the movie! I’m so gonna cry right now, I don’t want to cry,” she can be heard saying in the footage.
Emilia Pérez is in select theaters Nov. 1, then streaming on Netflix Nov. 13.
