Rookie Jared Wiley blown away by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce: ‘It’s a…see more
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are one of the greatest quarterback-tight end duos in NFL history, and the rookies are starting to take notice. Such is the case with newcomer Jared Wiley, who has been left with no choice but to marvel at the legendary pair’s magic.
Kelce and Mahomes have nothing to envy from legendary duos like Troy Aikman and Jay Novacek or Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. Together, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star pair have conquered three Super Bowls and are on their way to achieving an unprecedented third consecutive title.
The newcomers were already aware of Mahomes and Kelce’s talent and charisma, but it’s not the same to see it on television as it is to witness it in person, as Wiley recently declared.
In statements to the press, the Texas Christian University graduate had nothing but praise for the Chiefs’ star duo, saying he feels blessed for the opportunity to play with them.
Wiley’s admiration for Kelce and Mahomes
“I mean y’all know like Pat’s going to do what he does, obviously, the best quarterback I’ve ever been around,” Wiley said in a press conference after the Chiefs’ training camp this week.
He said it’s been great to work with Mahomes and “getting to take reps with him before everybody else gets here. You know, super blessed to, you know, be in a position to do that.”
He also spared no praise for Kelce. “His knowledge of the game, whether it’s of our offense, obviously he’s been in it for a while or just knowing what the defense is going to do and how he can kind of manipulate his routes,” the rookie explained.
Wiley was amazed by Kelce’s on-field skills and his ability to “change what he’s doing to make them think that he’s doing something else. You know, that’d be the biggest thing that I’d say that I’ve looked at so far.”
The heir to Kelce?
Kansas City picked Wiley in the fourth round of the 2024 Draft. The former Horned Frog had 90 receptions for 1,013 yards and 15 touchdowns in 59 games. Before the draft, scouts gave him good grades, praising his speed and strength, although they criticized him for waiting for passes instead of going after them.
Despite this, head coach Andy Reid seems to be thinking about the future. With Kelce nearing retirement, the Chiefs will need someone to give Mahomes another weapon in his arsenal.
For now, Wiley has made a good impression on the Chiefs’ stars. A few weeks ago, after the first OTAs, Mahomes said, “The more he gets down the field, he really makes those tough contested catches,” though he admitted he would like the rookie to play “more physical.”
Kelce also had good words for Wiley. “How he feels defenses and runs routes and just kind of picking his brain and seeing where he’s at,” said the 12-year veteran, perhaps feeling that he already has a heir for his cleats.
