Coco Gauff gets bizarre offer from Nick Kyrgios if she let’s go of coach Brad Gilbert

Eliminated in the fourth round of the U.S. Open

Nick Kyrgios appears ready to re-enter the tennis scene, but this time he’s eyeing a new role in coaching. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist, who has since moved into broadcasting, has offered to coach none other than Coco Gauff.

This comes after Gauff’s disappointing exit in the fourth round of the U.S. Open, where she was defeated by fellow American Emma Navarro in a three-set match. The loss prevented Gauff from advancing to the quarterfinals, repeating the outcome she faced at Wimbledon earlier this year.

Kyrgios made his interest in coaching Gauff known via social media. When a fan suggested that he team up with Gauff, Kyrgios didn’t hesitate, replying, “I’d coach her.”

Gauff’s current coach, Brad Gilbert, has come under fire recently, with some fans questioning whether he’s the right fit for the 20-year-old after another early Grand Slam exit.

Despite Gilbert’s impressive resume, which includes coaching tennis legends such as Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi, the partnership with Gauff has faced criticism, especially after her struggles at the U.S. Open.

Struggled against Navarro
During her fourth-round match against Navarro, Gauff’s frustrations were clear as she repeatedly glanced at her coaching box, seemingly seeking more direction.

Her performance on hard courts leading up to the U.S. Open had already raised concerns, particularly regarding her service game, which remained a point of difficulty throughout the tournament.

Adding to the discussion, Rennae Stubbs, who previously coached Serena Williams, also commented on Gauff’s technique in a conversation with Gilbert during an ESPN segment, further fueling the debate about the young star’s coaching situation.

“Where is Coco’s confidence?” Stubbs said.

“There’s no second serve, that’s the sign. And that’s a problem.”

“So under pressure, bad technique breaks down and her technique is…hard for me to say because Brad [Gilbert] is sitting here…but her technique, the elbow, is too low, the grip is a little weird as well. So it’s hard for her to get that nice first serve and then the same or similar second serve.”
