Coco Gauff celebrates A’ja Wilson’s historic achievement of becoming first WNBA player to score 1000 points in a single season
The American tennis star took to her Instagram Story to celebrate Wilson’s achievement. Gauff shared a post from @theshaderoom featuring the 28-year-old’s historic achievement. Here’s a look at Gauff’s story:
On Sunday, September 15, during a home game against Connecticut Sun, Wilson struck the historic basket with just a few minutes left in the fourth quarter. She scored 29 points in Las Vegas Aces’ 84-71 win on the night.
Earlier in the week, Wilson broke Jewell Loyd’s single-season scoring record, previously held at 939. The two-time WNBA champion was over the moon after breaking two records in a matter of days. Following the on-court festivities after the win over Connecticut, Wilson addressed her teammates with an outpour of emotions in the locker room.
“I hope y’all know how much I love each and every last one of y’all… Y’all will never understand how much y’all mean to me because there’s days where I hate being A’ja Wilson. I hate it. But when I come in to work and I see y’all smiling and I see y’all just happy, (it) makes me who I am,” she said.
The 28-year-old will get more opportunities to extend her record as the Aces next face Seattle Storm on Tuesday, September 17.
Coco Gauff was selected as the flag bearer for Team USA at the Paris Olympics. She holds the distinction of being the youngest-ever flag bearer in the USA’s history and the first tennis player to receive the honor.
Despite being a star attraction herself, the 20-year-old was visibly starstruck when she met A’ja Wilson. The WNBA star, part of Team USA’s contingent, had a wholesome conversation with Gauff, and the two were thrilled to meet each other. They even clicked selfies together, capturing the moment.
“I love you so much. You’re so inspirational… I used to play a little basketball, but I wasn’t good,” Gauff said.
