Coco Gauff broke crying rule with dad at US Open – ‘I was not expecting that’
Coco Gauff is usually a player who is able to keep her emotions in check but the American’s US Open triumph proved too emotional for her and her dad.
Coco Gauff broke her crying rule following her US Open triumph against Aryna Sabalenka in 2023. The American triumphed over Sabalenka to secure her first-ever Grand Slam title in New York by defeating the Belarusian 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Known for her composed demeanor on the court, Gauff’s victory over Sabalenka was a departure from the norm as the then-19-year-old let her guard down and broke into tears after clinching the title at her home Open.
Following her inaugural Grand Slam win, Gauff took to Instagram Live to discuss her emotional response. “I do never cry but the US Open happened. I wasn’t expecting that, okay? Y’all say what you want, I was not expecting that,” she told her followers.
Gauff later explained the reason behind her emotional outburst when a video of her as a nine-year-old dancing in the same stadium where she won the US Open surfaced. “If you’ve been following me for a while you just know this has been something the world has put on me at a young age,” she shared.
“I’m just happy that I was finally able to overcome all that to do it. So that’s where the tears came from and just a little bit of shock when I finished the match. Y’all saw that video where I was nine years old, I think that girl was crying, to be honest.”
“I don’t think I was crying, to be honest, I think that girl in the video was crying because I don’t like to cry. Not in front of people, I’ll cry alone, I’ll cry over a movie or a TV show but in front of people, no.”
Gauff wasn’t the only one shedding tears after her significant victory, as she also noticed her father, Corey, shedding his own. The teenager revealed that, like herself, her dad isn’t typically one to display his emotions.
