Charles’ heartbreaking reason for persuading the late Queen into her final balcony appearance
The late Queen Elizabeth was persuaded to make her final balcony appearance during her Platinum Jubilee celebrations
The Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the late Queen Elizabeth were a momentous event – marking not only 70 years of her reign as Britain’s longest-serving monarch but also, sadly, her final appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
However, this iconic appearance almost didn’t happen. It was due to a last-minute intervention from King Charles – then-Prince of Wales – that the late Queen was convinced to make the historic balcony appearance, a tradition the Royal Family upholds each year at the climax of Trooping the Colour, where they greet the crowds below and observe the customary RAF flypast.
During the Platinum Jubilee festivities, the late Queen had been under the weather, leading to some cancelled appearances. However, Charles’s intervention ensured her presence at the conclusion of the Jubilee parade and the festivities – driven by a deeply poignant motivation.
As reported at the time, Charles made a last-minute phone call to encourage his mother to persevere despite her ill health and make one final appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony. His persuasion was successful, and she appeared before the expectant crowds below, who had gathered to honour her lengthy reign.
Royal commentators gathered to dissect the poignant moments of the Platinum Jubilee in a Channel 5 documentary titled ‘Secret of the Royal Palaces’. They discussed the extensive efforts that went into the celebrations, acknowledging the Queen’s declining health and mobility which was largely kept out of the public eye, reports the Mirror.
