Caroline Wozniacki clarifies her comments about Serena Williams on social media after reaching US Open round four

Caroline Wozniacki has enjoyed a fine US Open thus far, but across the last few days, she has been making headlines for what has been saying on the court rather than her stellar performances.

After all, any mention of a player like Serena Williams, particularly in New York, is always bound to command attention.

The legendary American, who dominated the women’s game throughout her entire career, shares a great relationship with Wozniacki, with the two having turned from adversaries into great friends.

So, when news travelled that Serena was in town, it was expected that she might be there to pay her pal a visit.

All in jest, she spoke after her comprehensive win over Jessika Ponchet on court about the 42-year-old.

Asked by the interviewer if she had plans to catch up with Williams later on, Wozniacki replied: ‘I hope so! I’m going to text her.’

However, she then admitted: ‘Although I’m pretty mad at her for not showing up at my match, I saw she was watching Tommy [Paul].’

The US Open crowd jokingly reacted, sparking her to continue: ‘You know, but I think we have to talk about that a little bit later!’
