JUST IN: The View Co-host Whoopi Goldberg Condemn Cannes Film Festival 2025 Ban on Red Carpet Exposing Outfits and Calling Robert De Niro’s Lifetime Award “Unjustified
The Cannes Film Festival, long celebrated for its glamorous red carpet and avant-garde fashion, recently implemented a stricter dress code policy, reportedly banning overly exposing or provocative outfits.
The move, which festival organizers claim is intended to maintain a sense of elegance and decorum, has drawn ire from many in the industry who see it as an attempt to police personal expression.
Goldberg, never one to shy away from speaking her mind, took aim at the policy during a recent episode of The View.
“Who are they to tell people what they can and can’t wear?” she exclaimed. “The red carpet is about art, it’s about expression, it’s about pushing boundaries. You don’t get to slap a rulebook on that and call it class. Let these stars shine how they want to shine!”
She went on to argue that the ban disproportionately affects women, who often use fashion as a form of empowerment and individuality. “This isn’t about ‘elegance,’ it’s about control,” Goldberg said.
“You’re telling women they can’t be bold, they can’t be daring. That’s not what Cannes should stand for. It’s supposed to celebrate creativity, not suffocate it.”
The policy has already sparked backlash from other celebrities and designers, with some pointing out that Cannes’ red carpet has historically been a platform for iconic, boundary-pushing looks.
Social media platforms like X have been abuzz with reactions, with users divided—some praising the festival for attempting to maintain a certain standard, while others echo Goldberg’s sentiments, calling the rule outdated and oppressive.
De Niro’s Lifetime Award: “He Doesn’t Deserve It!”
Goldberg’s critique didn’t stop at the dress code. In a surprising turn, she also took aim at the festival’s decision to honor legendary actor Robert De Niro with a lifetime achievement award, a move that many in the industry viewed as a no-brainer given De Niro’s storied career.
