Lily Collins recalls what made Sandra Bullock the ‘kindest, most kickass’ role model on The Blind Side set
“She really took me under her wing during that experience and showed me the ropes,” Collins said.

Sandra Bullock didn’t just win an Oscar for her role in 2009’s The Blind Side — she also won the lasting devotion of her onscreen daughter, Lily Collins.

The 35-year-old actress, who made her feature film debut in the controversial sports biopic, recently opened up to Sky News about the major impact that Bullock had on her career.

“I feel very very lucky that when I first started out, in my first film, I was mothered by Sandra Bullock,” Collins shared. “She really took me under her wing during that experience and showed me the ropes. Even when she didn’t know she was teaching me, she was teaching me because I would watch her on set.”

Collins continued, “Just the way that she spoke to everyone, treated everyone, the questions she asked, and how she just valued her character in ways that I didn’t know, going into it, that you can value… Or things that you can ask or the right that you have to bring your own ideas.”

The Emily in Paris star added that working alongside Bullock prompted a revelation: “It’s possible to be at this point in your career and done what you’ve done and still be the kindest, most kickass, badass female as well? Oh, it’s possible!”

The Blind Side tells the story of real-life football player Michael Oher (played by Quinton Aaron), a Black homeless teen who’s taken in by the white Tuohys and comes to realize his potential. It earned a Best Picture nomination at the 2010 Academy Awards and won Sandra Bullock a statuette for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy. Collins starred as the Tuohys’ daughter, coincidentally named Collins, in one of her earliest screen roles.

Noting that she and Bullock have stayed in touch, Collins said, “It made such an impact on me as my first experience to have this amazing, strong, kind female lead the way.”
