Carmelo Anthony has announced he will partner up with Kim Kardashian by backing a charity aiming to help and empower girls in the modern world as he links up with the Kering Foundation.

NBA stars are known for their philanthropic efforts, often related to their own struggles in early life, such as the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and the Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan and now Anthony adds his name to the list.

“When the world takes care of women, women take care of the world,” Carmelo said, announcing the partnership. “Honored to co-host this year’s @keringfoundation Caring for Women event #STAYME7O.”

The venture will likely manifest in the form of a charity dinner which is expected to see some of the biggest names in Hollywood and American pop culture appear such as Kardashian, Salma Hayek, Naomi Watts and Matthew McConaughey.

It will be the third edition of the dinner hosted by the Kering Foundation, aiming to financially and physically boost women around the globe in their fight against gender-based violence and comes at a sensitive time following recent events.

Proceeds from the event will go to organizations such as Girl Effect, It’s On Us, and the National Network to End Domestic Violence in the latest endeavour by Anthony, a 10x NBA All-Star who also became a three-time Olympic gold medalist.

The 40-year-old previously established the The Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center in 2006 as well as donating $1.5 million dollars to the Living Classrooms Foundation, aiming to support job training for 35,000 people.

Gender-based violence: The stats

Statistics indicate a worrying trend of violence against women within the United States and the wider world, with the CDC and National Institute of Violence estimating approximately 25% of all women experience domestic violence in adulthood.

Around 15%-20% of women also report they have been raped within the United States, with around 21% of that figure being gang rapes, whilst almost 3 in 10 women per 100,000 as of 2011 reported being sexually assaulted in the USA.
