Rema responds to claims of his album ‘HEIS’ sounding like Kanye West’s ‘Yeezus’

The Afrobeats superstar doesn’t completely disagree with comparing his album to Ye’s.

Nigerian heavyweight singer and performer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has responded to claims of several who drew comparisons between his sophomore album ‘HEIS’ and American rap icon Kanye West’s sixth album ‘Yeezus’.

After releasing a debut album heavily dominated by Afro-fusion sound, titled ‘Rave & Roses,’ the 24-year-old followed with a sophomore album that is a pallet of different explorative genres of music, creating a fusion with the existing Afrobeats sound, thereby birthing a new style of Afrobeats many have categorised as the future of the genre as a whole in the coming days, weeks, or years.

Due to how experimental the project was, there have been comparisons with Kanye’s ‘Yeezus’, which was released 11 years ago and was a very experimental album that shaped another sound and phase for hip-hop.

Speaking with American media house Complex, Rema agreed with the comparison, tagging it as a fair comparison. He went on to state that although he did experiment on the album, he kept it raw and very original, especially to his African roots. Rema also mentioned that a lot of people in his camp, including his label, were sceptical about the experiment, but he appreciated the fact that they still trusted him.
